If you had walked up to Joseph in the prison the night before his breakthrough, I am very sure that you would never have imagined that his circumstances could change, or were about to change.

Same walls. Same chains. Nothing in his world suggested or even gave a little clue that in less than twenty-four hours he would be standing before the most powerful man on the planet and by day’s end, he would be ruling the whole of Egypt alone side with Pharaoh. It hadn’t been a happy or easy road. Joseph’s dreams were beautifully crafted by God, yet they looked like they were evaporating. He was betrayed, sold, shipped to a strange land, falsely accused, and thrust into jail.

Yet even in the darkness of that bleak prison, Joseph continued to serve faithfully. He interpreted the dream of Pharaoh’s chief butler and asked only that the butler remember him when things went smoothly.

The chief butler did not remember. “Yet the chief butler remembered not Joseph, but forgot him.” (Genesis 40:23)

Another two years dragged by in that dank prison. Still no change for Joseph. If you were to have stood in the prison that day, looking into that cold chamber, you would have seen no reason for hope that his circumstances were about to change. And then God acted.

Pharaoh had a dream. Joseph was summoned to the palace. “Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon” (Genesis 41:14).

Note that it says “hastily.” Think about that for a moment. Joseph had been waiting patiently for two long years. Yet when the time was right, when the clock struck the appointed hour for Joseph to leave that prison, things began to happen with all speed. First, they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. Next, he was clothed in fine robes (verses 38-42). Then he was given an almighty commission. The prisoner had become the prince. It all happened in a matter of days.

Joseph’s experience is a prime example of what Scripture calls divine acceleration. The phrase isn’t actually used in the Bible, but it captures the idea well. Divine acceleration occurs when God accelerates the clock, shortening the period between who we are and who we will be. It’s the time between our arrival and the fulfillment of our promise, purpose, and potential.

But here’s the thing about divine acceleration: It rarely happens fast. Joseph’s two years in the pit and the prison were not years of waste, they were years of preparation. God was not speeding the clock up just to frustrate Joseph. There’s a lesson here for us all. A slow day is not always a waste. Sometimes God is making you something, molding you, and maturing you for what He has in store.
